Great basin whiptails come from a warm and dry environment. And they are often found in states like nevada, arizona, california, and some parts of utah and mexico.
A 15 gallon is the minimum sized terrarium for 1 whiptail but, since they are so active bigger is better.
Whiptail males should not be housed together because they will fight eachother. These lizards are terrestrial meaning they are on the ground more than climbing although they will climb low branches rarely to search for food.
Whiptails need a temperature gradient from inside the terrarium. Be sure to use a screen top with the terrarium.
Temperatures within the terrarium should vary from daytime to nighttime hours.
Use two thermometers inside the terrarium one on the warm side and one on the cool side. Also use a hydrometer to monitor humidity levels.
The basking spot should be the warmest spot in the terrarium during the day. Heat should be provided by a high wattage bulb placed directly above the basking point. Bulbs should be turned off at night.
Humidity in the terrarium should be about 20 to 35 percent or you can just spray the habitat 2 times a week.
Basking spot temperature 102 to 115 degrees. Day cool area temperature 85 to 90 degrees. Night temperature can drop to 75 to 80 degrees.
Great basin whiptails are diurnal, meaning they are most active during the day. Also use a uvb bulb 10.0 bought at local petstores. These bulbs and the heat bulbs should be on for 10 to 12 hours a day.
You should use a minimum 2 to 3 inch layer of vermiculite or cypress mulch bedding because these lizards like to dig into the substrate.
Clean out waste weekly and change the whole cage every month or so.
Include decor to elevate the lizard closer to the basking spot. Things like cork bark and drift wood are good. Be sure if you bring anything from outside to bake it in the oven at 450 degrees for 10 minutes.
Great basin whiptails are mainly insectivores but, will eat some plant matter sometimes but insects are primary.
Use calcium supplementation bought at local petstores. I recommend feeding food from a bowl to avoid ingestion of the bedding. Food and water bowls should be emptied and refilled daily.
Insects crickets, mealworms, and occasional waxworms. Dubia roaches are good too.
Vegetables kale, creosote flowers, dandelions, shredded carrots are all good options.
Fruit berries, banana, melon fruit should only be fed once a week.
Food should be dusted in calcium twice a week.
Great basin whiptails might drink from a water bowl. If not it is to have one anyway.
Life span 7 to 10 years with good care.
Size 12 to 13 inches long. With some getting bigger.
